Kaianan climbed down off the bus with the rest of the foster kids, shielding herself with her jacket from the heavy rain beating down. The thunder had escalated and was crashing loudly into Earth. She held the piece of paper, soggy, in her hand, debating if she should consider the invitation. Who was this boy of light? Did she really want to find out? Deciding to be alone after dinner, she had time to reflect.
She made her way back into her dorm, now curiously icy, and fumbled for the light switch. In the midst of her heart jumping out of her chest, her neck was suddenly snatched in a tight clasp while her mouth was covered by a large hand. Kaianan snapped her eyes shut and tried to shout against the fingers but it was no use, she was securely bound. A ‘shh’ noise then reached her ears and she peeped her eyes open. Once the blurry black spots faded, the panic that sent her into a frenzy began to subside. With her eyesight cleared, through dripping wet brown hair, Julius’s green eyes appeared. The swelling breath from her nose finally slowed.
“If I let you go, don’t make a sound,” he said. She nodded. “Good.” Julius slowly dropped his hands from her mouth and neck and moved them around her arms.
Her vision was coming to terms with him for the second time. “Am I planning a revolt? Are you going to try take me quietly?”
He dripped water against her skin. “I’m not here to apprehend you.” He swiftly moved away from her, sitting in the desk chair by the gloomy twilight. “I needed to see you,” he said, quickly.
“Needed to see me?” Furrowing her brows, she watched him lower his head and run both his hands through his soaking wet hair as the thunder and lightning continued to shatter on outside.
“You don’t remember me at all, do you?” he searched her face in some sort of desperation.
“No, and I normally have a pretty good memory too. Don’t know what’s up with that,” she joked.
He stared out to the window.
She laughed nervously. “Umm … sorry?” Clearly he wasn’t in the mood for humour.
“Why did you do that? Destroy him like that? Do you know how challenging it will be to keep you safe now?”
“You tried to lock me up, if I remember correctly.” She looked to the ceiling in mock thought. “Yes, I remember. That’s right: ‘come quietly’ you whispered to me …. So, I’m not following you right now.” She knew that she had no control over her change—it had just happened to her—and he (and his company) was the one trying to apprehend her. None of this made sense.
“Can’t you take anyone’s advice?”
“I take everyone’s advice… And I think it’s becoming a huge problem.”
Julius took his eyes back out to the alleyway. “You’re so … you’re so—”
“So what?”
“Frustrating.”
Kaianan laughed loudly. “I know.”
“You can’t keep it together for long, can you? You’re either recklessly angry or devilishly humorous. And I never know which one I am going to get.
